Peachland End of Life Doula Services
Frequently Asked Questions
How is an End of Life Doula different from a hospice/palliative care nurse?
End of life Doula’s are not trained nor able to administer medication to individuals. The role of a Doula is holistic in nature, meaning they work with the individual and the family supporting them in the physical, spiritual, mental and emotional realm to prepare them for the end of life. Doula’s are complimentary to the hospice/palliative care nurses in that they can spend more time educating and working with the families to prepare them for the journey ahead.
What services do End-of-Life Doulas provide?
When someone is given a diagnosis of an end of life illness the time left is precious, we can help make the most of that time by helping to prepare to leave this world. We are companions for your loved ones if they have no other family close by. We will sit vigil at the end of life to hold their hand for those final last moments. We can help the client find peace by helping to have meaningful conversations with loved ones at the end. We will listen with no judgement and hold space for anything that needs to be said. We will help with legacy projects to bring happiness to the loved ones left behind.
How can hiring a Doula bring peace of mind?
We do not offer legal advice, we are there to navigate you through the end of life and give you options for preparing advance care plans, advance directives and representation agreements and wills. We can help with funeral preparations, we can help you tie up loose ends and prepare for your next journey. You can help those left behind not have to deal with so many details that can be stressful and prolong the process of closing your estate. It may sound small but we can help you collect documents and information your loved ones are going to need to process all the paperwork after you are gone, this alone can bring so much peace of mind to the thought of leaving your loved ones behind. If you are the person that takes care of all of the financial matters, does your loved one know how to do any of this? It can cause more grief than necessary not being prepared, it is an act of love for your family.
Are end of life Doula’s associated with Medical Assistance in Dying?
End of life Doula’s are not associated with MAiD however we can provide the proper resources to the individual who would like information about MAiD and will support individual and families through the process if that is the choice that you make.
